Do You Need Grip Socks for Pilates? What to Look For
Share
Before your first class, here’s what to know about the socks on your studio’s kit list.
You’ve booked a Pilates class, picked something comfortable to wear, and checked the address. Then you spot one more thing in the confirmation email: bring grip socks.
Do you really need a special pair? Will regular socks do? And what should you look for when buying them?
Start with your studio’s rules, then think about how the socks fit and feel.
1. Why do Pilates studios ask you to wear grip socks?
Grip socks have textured material on the sole, designed to add traction where your feet contact the floor or equipment.
That matters in a class where you may move between standing, seated, and lying positions. Ordinary socks generally don’t have that gripping surface.
Some studios make them compulsory. Club Pilates, for example, requires grip socks for all its classes. Other studios may have different policies, so check your booking information before arriving. Source: Club Pilates
If the instructions are unclear, a quick question will settle it: “Do I need grip socks, and are there any requirements for the type I bring?”
2. What can grip socks contribute to your practice?
Their main purpose is straightforward: providing a gripping surface under your feet.
How that feels will depend on the sock, its fit, the surface you’re using, and the condition of the grip. A pair that feels secure on one surface may feel different on another.
The fit matters alongside the sole. If a sock bunches under your foot or twists as you move, it can become something you keep stopping to adjust.
A useful pair should feel comfortable enough that your attention can stay on the class. You’re already listening to instructions, learning unfamiliar movements, and working out where everything goes.
Grip socks are one part of that setup. Keep following your instructor’s guidance on positioning, movement, and using the equipment.
3. What should you look for in a pair?
You don’t need a complicated checklist. Start with these four things.
A fit that stays in place
Follow the brand’s size guide. The sock should feel comfortably secure, with your heel sitting where it belongs. Check for excess fabric beneath your foot, twisting, or uncomfortable pressure around your toes.
Grip across the sole
Look at where the grip is placed and whether it meets your studio’s requirements. More dramatic-looking patterns don’t, by themselves, tell you how a sock will perform.
Comfortable fabric and seams
Pay attention to the details you’ll feel throughout class: the toe seam, cuff, fabric thickness, and how the sock sits against your skin. Preferences vary, so choose something you’ll want to wear regularly.
Clear care instructions
Check how the manufacturer recommends washing and drying the socks. After use, look for worn grip, stretched fabric, or changes in fit that could mean it’s time for a replacement.
Before your next class
Check the footwear policy, try your socks on beforehand, and pack a clean pair.
Once you’re in the studio, tell the instructor if you’re new. If your feet or socks feel as though they’re slipping or shifting during a movement, pause and ask for help with the setup.
The aim is to arrive prepared and give yourself room to learn.
